The best drive to Le Mans

Calais to Le Mans
Le Mans deserves more than a motorway slog; drive the best roads and scenic routes to get to the circuit this year. This alternative route from Calais turns the drive south into part of the occasion, trading much of the autoroute for a more scenic, considered approach through northern France, Normandy and the Perche.
The journey begins with an easy rhythm on the A16 and A28, giving you time to settle into the day before the route starts to unwind around the Vallée de la Bresle. From here, the drive slips onto smaller D-roads, where the pace becomes calmer, the landscape more immediate, and the road begins to feel less like a transit stage and more like a proper continental drive.
South of Gournay-en-Bray, the route threads towards Lyons-la-Forêt, bringing forested sections, village texture and a more intimate cadence. It is not about constant drama, but about flow: the kind of roads that let car and countryside work together without forcing the moment.
Les Andelys makes a practical mid-route reset, with a convenient fuel stop at Carrefour Market before the drive opens out again towards the Perche. This final middle stretch adds variety and space, moving through a softer, more rural France before the A28 returns for the approach into Le Mans.
The last miles carry a quiet sense of arrival. Boulevards replace back roads, the city gathers around you, and the route settles at the Circuit des 24 Heures du Mans – one of motoring’s great destinations, reached the better way.
