Sea to summit, the Route Napoléon
The Route Napoléon road trip unfolds as a story told in tarmac, a journey that begins on the sunlit curves of the Côte d’Azur and climbs, bend by bend, into the quiet power of the Alps. Leaving Golfe-Juan, the roads ease you in with coastal calm: wide lanes, smooth surfaces, and the steady build-up of elevation as the D6007 and D35 coax you inland towards Grasse. The approach is composed, almost ceremonial, before the scent of the world’s perfume capital signals your first pause.
Beyond Grasse, the route begins to speak in a different register. The D2085 threads through rising terrain, its rhythm marked by generous sweepers, open sightlines and a sense of gathering momentum. The run into Castellane is a highlight, a drive of purposeful flow and technical grace, made better still by the looming cliffs and glacial rivers that line the route.
Through Digne-les-Bains and on to Château-Arnoux-Saint-Auban, the road stretches its legs, offering a relaxed cadence and long, linking corners that invite smooth, uninterrupted motion. From here, the terrain climbs again, and with it, the character sharpens. Gap signals the start of true alpine driving: tighter corners, rising vistas, and a surface that rewards precision.
The stretch from Corps to Grenoble is the route’s final act, a blend of wide, flowing roads and shifting elevation, with the mountains falling away to reveal the Isère valley. The driving here is expressive but measured, the sort of route that invites presence over pace.
By the time you reach Grenoble, what lingers isn’t just the scenery, it’s the road itself: a route of evolving textures and tempo, where every turn carries the weight of history and the joy of the drive.

The Route Napoléon is sensational
"I’m beginning to realise that the Route Napoléon is many roads in one. Its sheer scale and variety mean that a new landscape and new challenge is never more than moments ahead of you. Having descended into a valley, the road has been ironed flat with lush fields either side of us, the dotted white line in the centre aiming at the next summit like the sights on a pistol. There’s no traffic for miles..."
