Le Shuttle to Spa Circuit

In our opinion, one of the best drives from Calais to Spa-Francorchamps for the Belgian Grand Prix, built around a more rewarding run into the Ardennes. Leaving the Eurotunnel Le Shuttle, the route moves from broad northern French rhythm into the Meuse valley, before tightening through forest roads, elevation and quieter backroads on the final approach to Spa. This road trip is an example of what New Roads can create for you.

Drive highlight

The final Ardennes section: tighter, quieter roads, rising forest and a properly focused finish before arriving at Spa-Francorchamps.

CAR CULTURE

Spa-Francorchamps is Formula 1 folklore: Eau Rouge, Raidillon, Ardennes weather and one of Europe’s great Grand Prix weekends.

Calais to Spa Ardennes Forest Run

Starting out from the Eurotunnel Le Shuttle Calais Terminal, the A16 gives the day a clean, easy opening before the route slips onto the D916 towards Café Aux Trois Moulins. It is a useful first shift in tone: less transit, more travel, with the roads beginning to feel local rather than simply functional. Café Aux Trois Moulins is the first proper pause, and a good place to let the day settle before the longer continental section begins.

From Cassel, the D933 and D948 build a smoother cross-border rhythm before the A25, A22 and E42 cover the bigger mileage with minimal fuss. This is the touring chapter, best taken with patience, letting the 911SC settle into its stride before the route starts to tighten.

The character changes after the motorway work. N40 and N53 draw the landscape closer as you approach Chimay Auberge de Poteaupré – a great place to stop for lunch. The N589, N964 and D877 bring a more rural cadence towards Le Pierest. From there, D8051 carries the route towards Hostellerie de la Vallée in Fumay through the Ardennes Forest, setting up the Meuse valley interlude through Givet. It feels stitched together, rather than stop-start, with enough continuity to let the drive breathe.

Beyond Givet, the run begins to find its Ardennes edge. N96, N936, N97 and N4 give way to a narrower rhythm through N888, N833 and N89 towards La Roche-en-Ardenne. The closing stretch through N651, N66, Rte de Coo, Rte de Trois-Ponts, Rte de Malmédy and Rte de l’Eau Rouge/N640 is the reward: forested, more technical, and properly suited to the arrival at Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps.
