A Drive Between Legends

Maranello and Mugello road trip a drive to remember. Leaving Maranello, where Ferrari’s legacy hums beneath the surface of every street, the drive begins with calm anticipation. The SP3 and SP21 wind gently through the hills around Serramazzoni, offering a smooth, steady climb and a road surface that invites confidence. The bends come measured, not aggressive, a prologue that hints at the drama to come.

Past Pavullo nel Frignano, the route gains definition. The SP4 and SS12 climb into the northern Apennines with a rhythm that feels carved by decades of purposeful driving. Broad corners, sweeping transitions, and sudden glimpses of distant ridgelines keep both car and driver engaged. The tarmac remains mostly predictable, broken only by the occasional ripple, a reminder that this is no sterilised pass, but a living, breathing mountain road.

As the route drops into Porretta Terme and arcs along the edge of Lago di Suviana, the pace softens. Here, it’s about flow that threads between forested slopes and water’s edge, the road curving gently with each contour. A perfect place to pause, reset, and breathe in the highland air.

From there, the SP40 and SP62 lead toward the Tuscan border, gradually widening, softening, and opening into the more generous sweepers around Barberino di Mugello. The landscape becomes broader, but the road never loses its sense of connection. Final approach via the SS65 della Futa and SP503 that descends into one of motorsport’s sacred grounds.

Arrival at Mugello Circuit doesn’t just mark the end of a drive, it completes a narrative. From the heart of Ferrari country to the roar of Tuscan asphalt, this journey is about more than reaching a destination. It’s about momentum, memory, and the joy of every turn in between.

Glorious Roads That Feel Like a Driving Kingdom

"Hooning through the Apennines never stopped feeling surreal. The Futa and Raticosa passes became our playground, a blur of bends, elevation and perfect late-afternoon light. We’d blast 70 miles up the A1 from Maranello or Sant’Agata, trading time for the promise of driving nirvana. And without fail, we’d stay too long in the hills, racing back for cold Peroni and the thinnest pizza diavola before the kitchen closed...."
