Peak District double loop

This two-day road trip through the Peak District is a celebration of contrast, from summit climbs to limestone gorges, sweeping moorland roads to narrow, hedge-lined lanes. Beginning from the calm edges of suburban Manchester, the drive quickly trades city pace for the open pulse of the A523 and A6, gently rolling toward the gritstone ridges ahead.

The A57 over Snake Pass sets the tone, rising steadily through woodland before cresting above the moors, where the road opens and flows in wide, well-sighted arcs. On the descent, the bends tighten and the surface remains composed, encouraging a confident, measured drive. From there, the route threads around Ladybower Reservoir, where trees crowd the road and light dances off the water, before turning south into limestone country.

The climb through Winnats Pass is a highlight. Steep, narrow, and flanked by sheer rock, it feels carved for drivers who enjoy immersion over speed. The road rewards precision and presence, not power. From here, the route rises to Mam Tor, and drops into quiet again near Blue John Cavern, where the tarmac softens and the story settles.

Day two picks up pace with the A537 to the Cat and Fiddle, one of the UK’s great driver’s roads, flowing, open, and endlessly rewarding. As the route loops east, it blends rhythm and variety: scenic climbs, steady descents, and those rare roads that feel stitched perfectly into the land. The ascent to Holme Moss is the crescendo, before a final sweep home through quiet villages and intimate B-roads.

The Carding Shed is a hidden automotive gem for coffee and classic cars lovers. Take a some time to reflect on the two days before heading home.

This is a route that gives you everything, flow, variety, and a true sense of movement through terrain. A proper drive, in every sense of the word.

Peak District reveals it’s crown jewel, the Snake Pass

"You’ve slogged through the eastern suburbs of Manchester, zipped along the few miles of the M67, and worked your way through Glossop, a town that sounds like a bubble of hot lava bursting. Then, before you’re clear of the houses, the road rises and you see green hills, then the first of many serpentine twists and turns. This is Snake Pass, one of a handful of famous roads that cross the Peak District National Park that stretches from Ashbourne in the south to Saddleworth Moor in the north..."
