DenBIES to GOODWOOD SCENIC DRIVE
For a relatively short drive, this packs a lot in. Starting out from Denbies Wine Estate before picking up Bradley Lane and the A24, the opening stretch is ideal for getting some temperature into the car without any drama. Before turning off the A24 you’ll see The Owl, a classic British pub with a decent-sized and open car park often used by car enthusiasts as an early morning meeting point so well worth pulling over to see what interesting cars might be in there.
The A29 is where it properly hits its stride. Long, open sections, consistent tarmac, and enough variety to stay interesting without ever feeling busy. After that you move onto the A272 which provides a different tempo with open commons and a widening horizon as the route arcs toward Billingshurst and Ides Common
The A285 then adds a bit more intent as it pushes toward the South Downs. There’s more load going through the car here – light compressions, small elevation changes – and it pays back clean, accurate driving. Duncton Viewpoint Car Park is worth a quick stop for the view and an evo-style photo opportunity, but the roads leading up to it are the main event.
The run into Goodwood Motor Circuit is short and relatively undemanding so a perfect opportunity to catch your breath before you get there. If you’re not heading to a Goodwood Breakfast Club meet, The Anglesey Arms, owned by our good friends Dominic and Shell, is a very good call either before or after – proper pub, well judged, and exactly what you want at the end of a drive like this.
